I am, however, a Christian with a fondness for oft-forgotten holidays, especially the Quarter and Cross-Quarter Days that of late have collectively come to be known as "The Wheel of the Year." The craftsmanship of this particular wheel is excellent, with plenty of beautiful symbolism for each holiday. Imbolc, for example (or, as others might call it, Candlemas) has lovely winter imagery, a candle, at a St. Brigid's Cross. The overall size is perfect for display, and the multiple sturdy hooks allow for easy rotation throughout the year. Plus the alchemical symbols for the seasons in the center ring are a nice touch. We've hung ours in the kitchen, where it is often admired and commented upon. At first the color did look a little purplish, but against a yellow wall it looks very much like wood even upon fairly close inspection. The design of each season really seems to capture the essence of that which it respectively represents. As another reviewer noted: the wheel that arrived on my door step was in fact more like Terra cotta, in both color and finish (Orange-ish and relatively matte). Because of this, the details did not show as much, and I knew that I would have to customize it to suite my particular aesthetic tastes. I used ebony colored wood stain on mine (brushed on thickly with chip brush, and then wiped stain away with a rag, leaving all of the nooks and crannies dark, while leaving highlights on the more raised areas). This process made it look more dramatic and more like wood. I probably should have used a less glossy urethane as a top coat, but c’est la vie....since I hung mine outside on my back patio, I’m hoping the elements will do their thing and naturally weather it down throughout the year. I actually like that the item arrived in a way that I could customize it and make it my own, rather than be pre “weathered.” The only suggestion that I would make to the manufacturer (which others have also mentioned in their reviews) is that there be another size option...larger! This 11-inch wheel could easily be 16+ inches and I would gladly pay extra for it.
