Casio MTP-1183Q-7A Men's Gold Analog Dress Watch w/Croc-Leather Band & Date

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Amazon page for this watch currently (as of June 29, 2013) incorrectly shows this watch's band width as 26mm. It's actually only 21mm. I was surprised when I temporarily replaced the band with a 20mm band and it fit almost perfectly, so I measured it and confirmed that the watch takes only a 21mm band.One other error on the Amazon page: the complete model number is MTP-1183Q-7ADF. This is the number shown on the warranty after I registered it on the Casio website. The Amazon page incorrectly gives the watch model as MTP1183Q. The model number stamped on the back of the watch case is MTP-1183.See the update at the end of this review for information about replacing the battery and especially about how to close the case afterward.Three things immediately impressed me when I received this watch yesterday: 1. This is a beautiful watch 2. The bezel around the watch face is raised above the watch crystal. This will help reduce the scratching problem that's been so common on Casio watches in recent years. It gives the watch some protection if you accidentally hit a wall or door with it. Most Casio watches I've seen don't have this. 3. When I registered the watch on the Casio website, the warranty was extended from one year to two years. The webpage said that the extension is only for this particular model and didn't mention any expiration date for this offer. I registered it in June 2013. NOTE: I bought the watch from Watchtronics. I don't know whether all sellers of this watch offer the factory warranty.I really only have one gripe about the watch, but it's not serious enough to knock any stars off. The band is much too shiny. It's especially bothersome to me because the watch is also very shiny. I immediately replaced the band with a Speidel band that I already had. The watch looks much better with a more normal leather band. This is personal preference. I'm sure many people will love the band's looks. Inexpensive Casio watches tend to have really cheap looking bands, but this one is not cheap looking. It's just too shiny for my taste.The other reviewers who complained about its stiffness are right. It was even stiffer than I expected. My first reaction was to wonder whether it came from a Kevlar cow (just kidding!). The other reviewers are probably right that it will become more pliable after it's been worn for a while. I won't know because I immediately replaced mine.The Amazon pages shows this watch's band as 26mm, but it's actually 21mm. The 20mm Speidel band I put on it is almost a perfect fit. Just a very small part of one pin is showing. The Speidel is a nice band, but it's lighter in color than I'd like on this watch, so I'm looking for dark leather band. I'll update this review after I find a band that looks good on it.This is a discontinued Casio model, so you won't find it on the Casio website, although you can register it for the warranty and get a two year warranty. I knew it was a discontinued model but bought it anyway because for me it looks better than current models. The main risk in buying it is that the battery may be older than on a current model and so could need to be replaced sooner. It's a risk I'm willing to take for this watch.The watch's module number is 1332. The back of the watch states that it was assembled in China, but that movement is Japanese.The day of the month window is very small and difficult to read. This is fine with me. I didn't want a date display at all. I have enough other digital devices that give me the date. I just want the time from my watch. If you want the date, this is not the best watch for you.The procedure for precisely setting the time is: 1. Wait for the second hand to reach 12 o'clock and pull out the crown (the button on the side) two clicks. 2. Rotate the crown to the correct time 3. Rotate the crown to move the minute hand four or five minutes past the correct time. 4. Rotate the crown to move the minute hand back to the correct time 5. Push the crown all the way in.To set the day: 1. Don't set the date at night between 8pm and 2am. 2. Pull the crown out to the first click 3. Rotate the crown until the correct day of the month is displayed. It takes several turns of the crown for each day. You can't rotate back a day. You can only go forward. It takes so many winds for each day that if you accidentally set it one day in advance, it will take a minute or two for you to wind it all the way forward to the correct day.The date feature strikes me as completely useless. There's no way to set the month and year, so there's no way for the watch to know how many days the current month has. It seems to me that unless you reset the day of month every time there are two consecutive months with different numbers of days, the day of month displayed will be wrong. However the date display is so small that you may not even notice that the date is wrong. I don't plan on even looking at it!I am grateful for Amazon's "Free Return" policy for watches. It's hard to tell from a photograph whether a particular watch is right for you. I ordered three watches over a three week period. The first two were both Casio models I thought I would like, but which I disliked when I saw them in person, so I returned both. This is the third watch. I knew immediately upon seeing it that this was the watch I wanted.I'll update this review if anything changes. Overall this watch impresses me other than the shiny, stiff band and the date display.UPDATE AFTER TWO YEARSI'm still happy with this watch after two years, but I don't wear it every day. I use a different Casio with a nylon band as my every day watch so sweat doesn't damage the leather band on this one when I exercise. I wear this watch when I want a better looking watch. Unlike other Casio's I've bought in recent years, the crystal hasn't gotten scratched at all. I've had others that scratched almost immediately with less wear than this watch has had.The battery lasted a little under two years. I replaced it myself. The battery is a 377 Silver Oxide. Opening the case and replacing the battery is fairly easy, but putting the back of the case back on is not. You can find YouTube videos showing how to open the case. I used a Stanley utility knife to pry the rear case off. There's one spot where you can insert the knife edge. Don't use a household knife - the blade probably won't be sharp and strong enough. You can use the knife point to nudge the old battery out.The problem came in closing the case. Before trying to close it, be very careful to align the tiny cutout in the case back with the winding stem. The cut out is very small. It's easy to miss and easy to get out of alignment when you do the next step.The next step is closing the case. It's tricky. There's a YouTube video showing how to do it with a vice, but it did not work for me. I ended up using an 11SP Irwin Vise Grip, but a G-clamp or regular Vise Grip should work also. I placed pieces of thin wood on both the front and rear of the watch to protect it. It takes a lot of pressure to get the case back on. You'll feel like you're going to crush the case, and you might if you're not careful. I worked up slowly, repeatedly opening the Vise Grips and turning the adjusting screw in just slight more, then trying again to close the Vise Grips. When you get the right amount of pressure, you'll know it. The case snaps closed loudly.My watch is now back together and running fine again.

This watch is beautiful, reliable, and inexpensive.It looks much more expensive than it is. It’s 38mm case size works well for men and women.It’s a Casio, and that means a whole lot of watch for very little money.

I’ve owned Casio watches in the past and have always loved them. This model specifically blew me away. Really like the contrast of the gold and leather band. Someone complemented the watch when I wore it and that was the first time that has happened to me. I do wish there was one more hole to tighten the watch because I do have small wrists. Other than that, I love this watch and a great price to go along with it.

Well made watch which keeps accurate time. The only downside is the leather band is rather stiff. I'll replace it with an expandable metal band which I prefer. Recommended.

Perfect watch for my wrist. My wrist is close to 7 inches and I replaced the strap watch with another one 20mm and fits perfectly.

The strap started to deteriorate when it got a bit of water on it.

Verrebbe da definirlo eccellente e superlativo, se non fosse per alcuni ovvi e inevitabili limiti che ha, a causa della fascia di prodotto in cui si colloca.Infatti non ha alcuna resistenza alla pressione idrica e il cinturino (rossastro) è chiaramente di basso livello, anche se così non sembra a prima vista...E' invece l'aspetto estetico il suo punto di forza, unitamente ad un prezzo abbordabilissimo.Con un diametro escluso corona di 37 mm., risulta molto gradevole e sobrio, ed è una versione provvista anche di datario abbastanza leggibile.La colorazione oro non appare smaccata e finta, il quadrante è elegante, il marchio Casio affidabile.Un modello davvero molto carino.
