When you turn the green knob the cable stay physically connected but electrically disconnected. The battery is completely isolated electrically but the cable is not loose. It is quick and easy to use. If you want a visual reminder it is 'off' or to prevent someone from reconnecting the battery you can completely unscrew the green knob and take it out of the cable clamp. I just turn the knob out a few turns and do not remove it from the clamp. I put a dab of DOW #4 on the contacts to prevent corrosion over time. It probably was not necessary as the contacts are plated and battery is protected in the car under the back seat. Simply screw tight to engage battery use and loosen to disengage. The green knob can not fully be removed or misplaced. **Q: What kind of metal is this made out of?** A: It is made of cast zinc, plated with a thin layer of a yellow metal that is similar to brass or bronze. Cast zinc can easily crack under stress as a few reviews mentioned it. **Q: Should the be mounted on the positive terminal or the negative terminal?** A: Must be installed ONLY ON THE NEGATIVE terminal of the battery!!! The reason is safety. The positive terminal has a red plastic cover to protect against accidental shorts which can be very dangerous. The negative terminal does not have a plastic cover because if it shorts to a grounded metal part nothing would happen. If you install it on the positive terminal, you will have exposed metal that can accidentally be shorted.
