The stain will have little-to-no effect on the painted portions of the wood. As for the exposed wood, the saturation and penetration of the stain will depend on what condition the wood is in. Having not seen your project, I can’t predict exactly what’s going to happen. But I can tell you Varathane Fast Dry Wood Stain is incredible. We bought 4 or 5 different colors to try, and have been thoroughly impressed. The color, ease of application, and the depth of color are all 5/5 stars!! **Q: Can i use this on top of semi gloss paint?** A: I don’t think it will penetrate the wood because of the paint. **Q: Can I put this over another stain color that I don't like?** A: This stain is meant to penetrate the wood. So first, if your item has stain and no other finish (like poly or other sealer) then yes, you can put it on and it will penetrate and “stay”. It will color over the first stain, but it won’t be true to the weather gray color. It really depends on the first color. **Q: Is this Rust-oleum?
