I nest the 1/2 over the 1/4, over a 5 gallon bucket. One shovel full at a time, shake a bit back and forth, and throw the big stuff back into my "working compost". the compost needs to be a bit on the dry side for it to work, otherwise the wire gets coated with wet compost stuff and kind of clogs up. another thing I found was if you think you can bang the thing upside down on something hard to get the clogs out, it works 4 or 5 times then breaks. maybe if you had something kind of rubber like to bang on, but I was using a dead tree next to my pile. Better to just brush off the wires with your gloves, else, like me, you're reviewing your order list and ordering another one to replace the one you broke. I had some year old compost, really dry, and the stuff was like black gold after the sieving. My plants looked like they'd been professionally mulched:) and grew like crazy this year.
