The significance of the notches enable you to alter the relief and chisel angle of the drill bit. By going + you will increase the relief angle of the drill bit, useful for high speed drilling in softer metals. And vis versa going -. 45 degrees is the correct chisel angle for a drill bit. By using the alignment notches + or - you can make the drill bit more or less aggressive. A less aggressive drill has a lower chisel and relief angle. I love mine, easy to set up and use. Very happy! *by S***R on 5 August 2020* I had a Drill Doctor 350 which was ok but it could only sharpen an angle of 118. I drill a lot of metal and 135 is a better angle for this material. I upgraded to the 500 and WOW am I ever impressed. The 500 can sharpen both angles and do it well. There’s not big learning curve either. There’s a video on using it as well as a pretty good manual included.
