## Description

In 1819, the 87-foot 238 ton whaler Essex sailed from Nantucket, Massachusetts on a two year voyage. The small ship was recently refitted including four 28 foot whaling boats. The crew included George Pollard, the captain; Owen Chase, first mate; Matthew Joy, second mate; and a 18 man crew. The Essex was one of 70 Nantucket ships in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. In the spring and summer of 1820, the Essex hunted whales in the south Pacific. Having no luck, the whaler restocked supplies and arrived at new offshore grounds 2500 nautical miles south of South America. On November 16, 1820, an Essex whaling boat, commanded by second mate Owen Chase, was destroyed by a whale surfacing beneath it. On November 20th Essex lookouts sighted spouts. The remaining three whale boats set out for the pods of whales. Two whale boats harpooned whales. On the Essex a large 85-foot whale rammed the dove under the ship. The whale swam five hundred yards ahead of the ship and turned toward the Essex. First mate Owen Chase writes the whale ³appeared with tenfold fury and vengeance in his aspect. The surf flew in all directions about him with the continual violent thrashing of his tail. His head about half out of the water, and in that way he came upon us, and again struck the [bow of the] ship.² The great whale struck and shattered the bow and sank the Essex. Eight men survived. In October of 1821, Owen Chase completed the Narrative of the Most Extraordinary and Distressing Shipwreck of the Whale-Ship Essex. Herman Melville's interviews with Captain Pollard and Chase's account were the basis of the classic book Moby-Dick. This is a historical resin replica of the whaler Essex. This a vertical designed 6 inch whale tooth. The front side shows 'The Real Moby-Dick' rising out of the water with names of the eight survivors. The back shows the Essex under sail; the longitude and latitude of the sinking; and the names of the captain and first mate of the Essex.

    Don't expect realism

The scrimshaw looks good but tooth is shiney smooth, could use some scuffing up or something to add to the realism of the tooth

This is a replica Sperm Whale tooth with scrimshaw etching of the men who survived the (real life) White Sperm Whale attacks that gave Herman Melville the ideas for his famous fictional book "Moby Dick".
