I did use a smaller pilot to start a hole, then used this to round out the spot before plunging in so not to stray off course. Review: Great quality and value. - Excellent quality. I was able to drill 8 holes in 3/8 porcelain tile to install a shower door. The first drill bit lasted 7 holes and went through the porcelain very easily. To keep the heat down, a second person was spraying a small stream of water with a garden sprayer. I highly recommend these.
