I find it works best if you lift the hair with a brush or comb and apply to the roots as you move upward. It will get on your skin if it's real wet and you push too hard, but you can just wipe it off with a damp tissue. I have very dark brown hair and this covers the shiny grays as they grow out between colors. It definitely tones them down and makes it look natural until I can get colored again. It is "temporary" and will wash out with your next shampoo or if you go swimming but I find it lasts all day and have never had it run even if I sweat.
