I've read most of Hill's works, and she's a first-rate author...sometimes. Basically there is a range of quality to her books from outstanding, to average but enjoyable, to a downright slog. "The Stars at Night" is not one of her better books. And no, my dislike isn't because it's one of her straightforward romances versus one of her romance/cop stories. "At Seventeen" and "Behind the Pine Curtain" are also fantastic Hill stories which are pure romances. I dislike this book specifically because it's unbelievably boring and Hill makes the cardinal writing error of repeatedly telling instead of showing.Basically, Hill wrote two characters who have no conflict with each other and thus zero drama or tension. There is in theory, and the two characters spend an enormous amount of time telling each other how they're not right for each other--yet not giving any reasons at all except "you're not my type." But it's glaringly obvious from the very beginning that the main characters are perfectly compatible. And the characters basically know it too soon after meeting.Romances are only fun when there is some internal conflict that creates palpable tension. "The Stars at Night" not only skips those moments, it instead fills the space with endless descriptions of birdwatching and astronomy.Would not recommend this book, but if you're new to Hill--go read "Hunter's Way" and you'll see why she's developed a fanbase. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The beauty of nature is awe inspiring! *by D***Z on Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2020* GERRI HILL has done it again! I loved the storyline and couldn't help but fall in love with Kyler and Lexie. They were so believeable as were the supporting characters introduced throughout the story. GERRI'S descriptions of the park, birds and wildlife pull you right in! Thanks so much, GERRI, for a truly heartwarming read. Kyler loves her Park Ranger job in the middle of nowhere Texas. Lexie loves her job of social mixing in bustling Austin. When Lexie loses everything in the city, she needs a new life. I really liked both women but especially Kyler. She was all that Lexie didn't want! Fate can play funny tricks. Their relationship takes place over just a few weeks but the pacing was still very good. Wonderful characterization. There was nothing not to love in this book---including a very nice trip to the Davis Mountains. Such a good book and it was like a mini-vacation away from the woes of the world with just words alone. Many, many thanks to the author for sharing her words.
