I found these, which are even better than the wood or plastic I had in mind! They're just the right size for little kids to hold (a large handful for an adult), and the pockets mean that if they get bored of the words I chose I can easily replace them. The papers don't fall out even when tossed. The soft foam shape means I don't need to worry if they throw a bit too hard—no one will get hurt like they might with wood or plastic dice—and they will hold up much longer than thin cardboard or paper would. (Bonus: They're washable!) The negative is because these are foam and made fairly cheaply, they're not perfect cubes. For the most part it's fine, but one of my blocks tends to land on the same two sides. It just means I have to switch around the cards I made on that dice occasionally so they don't always get "monkey" and "dinosaur." For this preschooler activity it's fine enough, or as a photo cube for babies it wouldn't matter at all, but I mention it in case that matters to someone considering these.
