Bite Me: Tell-All Tales of an Emergency Veterinarian

For those not in vet med, it's eye-opening
I genuinely loved this book. It was honest and straightforward about the difficulties faced by those in veterinary medicine. No matter in what capacity, this book hits home, especially those who work in ER. I think it's the comradery and the quirkiness of those I work with that makes another night ER bearable. Some owners even make it worthwhile, reminding us why we're in vet med to begin with. But some owners make it very hard to work a shift without wanting to cry. I think she did a wonderful job explaining this and would definitely recommend this book to others!

Support your local veterinarian
Dr. Lefkowitz uses anecdotes from her experience in emergency and family vet care to provide an enlightening perspective of animal care from the caregiver’s viewpoint. Some anecdotes are humorous or touching, others surprising or disturbing. However all serve to show what veterinarians deal with as they provide care for both pets and their humans. After reading this book I understand better the stresses and rewards involved with being a veterinarian. I would recommend this book because it is both entertaining and informative.

The most wonderful book!
Thank you, Laura, for taking time to write this insightful book about the veterinarians' life and struggles. It goes straight to hearts of all people who love animals. You are an amazing person, both kind and tough. If only you could be an Avian Vet too!!! I would drive to Boise area with my 3 parrots! Thanks, Olga

A very real perspective into the world of vet med
As a veterinary technician, I thoroughly enjoyed this story, even though it was written through the eyes of a doctor instead of a nurse. This book offered a very real perspective into the daily life of a veterinary professional, from the triumphs to the tragedies, and all the humor and heartwarmth in between. The author painted a wonderful picture of the people, patients, and colleagues you meet in this profession, the good and the bad. I found familiarity in many of her recollections - though I’ve only been in practice for 6 years by comparison. My favorite part of this book is the attention it draws to the mental health crisis facing veterinary professionals today, and I sincerely hope that this story may be encouraging to those struggling, as well as amusing and inspiring to all other readers. Highly recommend.

Enjoyable
A good read, but comes off at times as whining about how hard people are to work with. I expected more actual animal stories. Chapters about international travel were completely irrelevant.

Great read!
I really enjoyed this book. Written from a vets viewpoint is an eye opener for a pet owner ! I have had cats and dogs for most of my life and feel I am a responsible caretaker /owner. Loved all the stories this author shared sad, happy and funny anecdotes. As a nurse, I feel deeply about vet suicides and know as a caretaker you have to balance your emotional side with your own mental health. Each individual has their own way of doing this, but definitely has to be balanced. Thank you for sharing this delightful yet deeply moving stories of your practice.

Not James Herriot
This book provides a view of contemporary veterinary practice. Unlike Herriot, who for the most part, loves his clients, the author focuses on the stress and frustrations her clients thrust upon her and her colleagues. It is not a book for children. While the book is not a feel-good book like Herriot’s, it is packed with useful information and is entertaining.

True Tales from one who knows
I also know what it's like to be an ER vet. In fact, Laura and I shared a house together at vet school. This book really tells it like it is with each chapter. It's not just playing with puppies and kittens. It's a wonderful profession to be in and I wouldn't want to be anything else but each day is filled with so much emotions (sometimes a rollercoaster) which Laura tells it like it is. It is very well written and filled with stories, both happy and sad. I absolutely loved it and it's not because I'm biased. Laura has many talents and writing is definitely one of them.
