## Description

Fluval FX6 is a high performance canister filter with many outstanding features designed to make aquarium fish keeping easier and more convenient than ever. This super capacity yet compact canister filter has a pump output of 925 gallons of water and has a filter circulation of 563 GPH, which both work to produce cleaner and healthier results. Filtering material can easily be placed in a removable stack of media baskets, which is at the heart of Fluval's multistage filtration. The baskets are precision-engineered to eliminate water by-pass, making filtration more efficient. The baskets can hold a total of 1.5 gallons of media and can be stacked in the precise combination of layers that will work best for your aquarium. Each one is lined with a foam insert for effective mechanical pre-filtering. Instant-release T-handles let you lift and separate the baskets quickly and easily, making routine maintenance simple. FX6 also features Smart Pump Technology, which provides optimum filter performance. This advanced technological feature employs an electronic circuit board that continuously monitors the pump. Impeller speed and force are constantly measured to ensure power output and energy efficiency. It also manages the filter's self-starting feature and evacuates air that may enter or build up within the filtration system. On a 12-hour cycle, the pump will pause and allow trapped air to escape, ensuring the best filtration efficiency. Only 21" in height, FX6 fits under most aquariums. Fluval first broke onto the aquatic scene in 1975 by introducing the world’s first 3-stage filter with synchronous motor technology. Since then, Fluval has built a legacy around this pioneering spirit, relentlessly adapting in a changing world to launch innovative aquarium products. Fluval’s mission is not just about building products that mimic the natural world, but inspiring aquarists of all skill levels to enjoy and respect the hobby for generations to come.

Review: Simply the best filter on the market. - The Fluval FX line of filters is a real work horse which rarely goes wrong if you do the upkeep on it. I use one on the tank I have my turtle in, and it keeps the water crystal clear, even though the old boy digs a lot an tries everything he can to cloud up the water. If I take it off line for cleaning (which is a breeze) or maintenance, it will get the water clear again within an hour if the turtle has been very active while it was off, and much sooner if he wasn't moving around too much. He's a very active turtle, and a very messy eater, but he's neither active enough nor messy enough to overwhelm the FX-6. I also use an FX-6 on my hillstream tank which requires a lot of flow. It pushes the water through at a very good clip so that the stream has a pretty good current for my hillstream loaches and for my rainbow shiners to run in when they're getting ready to spawn. I have the FX-4 on a 20 gallon tank which is probably just a bit overpopulated, But again, it is a good enough filter that it keeps the water quite clean. With surface skimmers on my tanks, even the water's surface is clear. To clean the filter media, all you need to do is lift the media baskets out, the use the filter's bucket to clean the sponges and reusable media, replace the media which has broken down too much to be reused, or which uses chemical treating, then either empty the old water out and replace it with fresh clean, or keep the old water if it's not too bad (it is almost always too bad). The reason you clean the media in the water the filter bucket has in it is so that you don't loose any of the beneficial bacteria which is growing in it. The FX series of filters have variable flow valves, which is a nice feature, though many filters have that. If you close the valves before opening the lid of the filter, you don't have to worry about draining the hoses, and they will be good to go when you turn the filter back on and open the valves. No priming needed. Everything in this filter is easily repairable if something goes wrong. If something happens which wears out the impeller, it's very easy to take the old impeller out, and drop a new one in. It's also easy to replace all the O-rings when they get old and start to loose their ability to seal the unit. If you're unlucky, you might need to do that once a year, but it's more likely that you'll just need put new lubricant on them. I am mechanically challenged, so if I find it easy to take care of, I'm sure just about anyone will be able to do it. I have had problems with several of the other big brands of filter makers, but I have never had a Fluval FX series filter go south on me. I recommend them to anyone who wants to keep their fish's environment clean and healthy. If I ever start another tank, I'll definitely be buying another Fluval FX.
Review: Send it!!! You won’t regret it. - Ive been running the Fluval for about 3 months now, and I am absolutely OBSESSED with its quality. I have a 75 gallon tank with a turtle and pleco (both produce A LOT of waste). Previously I was a die hard Penn Plax Cascade fan for the last 5 years, but my last two had motor failures and they changed their warranty terms finally, so I decided to switch it up. Long ago I wanted a Fluval, but but the price was steep so I settled for less and let me just say it’s the best investment you can make. It’s quiet (don’t know why other reviews say it’s not unless they are keeping their water levels really low), my tank remains crystal clear with my normal monthly maintenance routine, and it is easy to clean and change out my media. The fasteners are really not that complicated and don’t take that long to unlock like other reviews say. The canister itself is designed so that it is air tight and I’ve had no signs of leaking. The outtake is made so you have two options to direct the flow of your water which is helpful if you have a basking platform above half of your tank. Highly recommend.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How is the longevity of the FX6 compared to other filters people have owned? (primarily Eheim). I will be using it in a turtle tank if that matters...**
A: I've been using the Fluval FX5 on my 100 gallon red eared slider turtle tank for about 12 years now. It's worked flawlessly over the years. I'm about to replace it with the FX6 due to various things starting to get worn out. So yes it does have pretty good longevity.

**Q: I have a 40 gallon tank for two read eared sliders. Would this filter be too strong or just right for my tank? Also, does it come with the hosing?**
A: I've got it on a 55 gallon and it works fine! With turtles you want at least 3 times the filtration so 40 gallons of water needs a 160 gallon rated filter or stronger. Also it is recommended that you house your turtles separately as they are going to grow to be 8-12 inches long and are solitary in the wild! I recommend you join red ear slider turtle owners resto group on Facebook and they will have all the information on best diet best filters and best tanks for your turtles!

**Q: I am sitting up a 75 gallons tank in my office i don't want to clean it a lot what fluval pump would you suggest**
A: Frequent water changes aren’t a necessity if you set your tank up accordingly. Look up low maintenance/ self sustaining and see for yourself. I have a 75, 50, 29, and two turtle tanks, turtles being the the only ones I regularly change water. No deaths, plants are healthy(NO SUPPLEMENTS OR CO2 added), water is clear, and I’m using HOB filters with only ceramic balls. There’s guides for what you want online that will help far more than these comments.

**Q: Fluval fx4 or fluval 406? 80 gallon planted tank. what do you think?**
A: If you have a heavy stock of fish I would aim for 7-10x total gallons of filtration.
Currently running 2 fx6 on my 260 gallon which is about 7x flow rate and I’m debating adding a third to get closer to that 10x mark.

These provide great bio filtration and if you set them up right with some tweaking can agitate the surface of the water which increases oxygen in the water and allows more life to exist in your aquarium.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great upgrade from the 406s
*by G***. on December 19, 2018*

In my opinion, Fluval makes the best filters, absolutely silent when properly maintained. I bought the FX6 to take the place of two 406s I have been running on my 90 gallon aquarium. It took me a while to figure out the filtration flow path but it became obvious after understanding the internal tubes. Still, it would be nice to have a flow diagram included in the owner's manual. The only issue I experienced was more related to the placement in my stand/cabinet but I must assume that most people would run into the same issue if they have a similar cabinet. I wish Fluval would consider using better rubber feet on the legs to prevent vibration but I used rubber/cork pads to isolate my Fluval FX6 from the cabinet floor. The tiny rubber pads that came with the filter were not enough to prevent the filter from developing a low-frequency vibration that resulted in the whole cabinet emitting a very annoying hum. The filter itself is very quiet but sitting in the hollow cabinet allowed the conditions to arise. The filter does not touch the sides of the cabinet nor do the hoses so I knew the filter feet (3) were the only contact point. As soon as I placed these under the feet the vibration ceased and no more humming noise in the living room! Worked like a charm and for less than $8, a very cheap fix! (Bought on Amazon). As I imagined, the FX6 is keeping my water crystal clear with the filtration setup I am using internally that includes Purigen and 2 polishing pads in the last stage. I trust I will get 3 month between cleanouts that I was getting with the 406s with bi-weekly 25% water changes. Been up and running for over a week now and water parameters are perfect. Very happy with this filter. If you have a vibration issue, this should help you eliminate it as well.
