### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

    Vlad

*by B***R on June 23, 2012*

While the eastern European vampire theme is well established in popular literature, Carlos Fuentes casts a new illumination to this dark tale, bringing Vlad, a vampire of old wealth, to modern-day Mexico City. Fuentes weaves in masterfully issues of class and the quest for eternal youth. In this version, Fuentes introduces a dilemma of a two upper class parents, who, having already lost one child, must decide to relinquish their young daughter to Vlad, to keep her alive forever. This short book, similar in length, to Aura, is a quick read, but be prepared for a frightening images spun by the most masterful of storytellers. Two sequels to Vlad are expected to be published posthumously, extending Fuentes' masterpiece from beyond his grave.

### ⭐⭐⭐

    deliciously creepy but incomplete

*by B***P on September 6, 2012*

Vlad has Fuentes' usual wonderfully precise atmospheric descriptions. He rejected the currently fashionable craze for pretty-boy vampires and returns to the proper tradition of a hideous monster in disguise with some wonderful twists, the surprise of which I won't ruin, but involve the vampire's eyes and ears. The problem of the novel is it's incompleteness. The end is unsatisfying, and seems due more to the author's uncertainty as to direction rather than the possibility of a sequel.
