    Beautiful Illustrations and Clear Information

This was the second Cathy Johnson book I've purchased, and I love it. The content is well-organized and covers a little bit of everything. The text is concise and well-written, and the illustrations are lovely and very helpful. Cathy's use of "handwritten" notes and suggestions are highlight what makes each sketch work and how those techniques work across the spectrum of media. My skill level is intermediate, but I haven't been to an art class in years. For me, this book is a good refresher for pencil, charcoal, and watercolor sketching and also provides a basic introduction to things I've never used before such as micron pen, colored pencils, and watercolor pencils. Cathy's approach in this book is no-nonsense, but it's also thoughtful and personal. I highly recommend this book for motivated beginners to intermediate sketchers. Those with advance skills can appreciate the wealth of lovely full-color illustrations.

    Great for beginners

This guide for creating your own sketchbook by Cathy Johnson is set up with some demonstrations, and tips, to guide a new sketchbooker in starting the habit. This book works particularly well as a companion to her Artist Journal Workshop book- so those who aren’t quite ready to keep a visual journal can work with the ideas and suggestions in this one to start from scratch. While the author does have a few tips and techniques in the book, they’re very basic, as it is more of a guide to encourage a new sketchbooker. That’s not really an issue though, as it works well with her other books to create a great library for those who want to produce art for pleasure.
