    Flying Fun

This has been great for learning to control quad copters. It is oh course not a multi hundred dollar unit and has it's weak points. I have been able to not worry about the height of this copter and focus on basic controls. I am not a spring chicken, and cannot just pick things up and fly them around like when I was a child. I didn't have a problem putting this together, and it seems to be well made. The control is easy and because it is only early spring I have only taken it for short test outside. It worked ok outside as long as the wind was not too high. Watch your battery if it dies on you will lose control of this copter and will be chasing it down. I guess the radio loses contact before the motors shut down. The altitude hold works just ok, it does go up a foot or so then drop back, or it may do the opposite drop a foot and try to recover up. I haven't broken anything yet so I can't say anything bad. Get extra batteries. If you go with the longer lasting batteries the altitude hold does not work as well. Ask me any questions I will be happy to answer.

I had an issue with the Drone at first. It would be 50 feet away roughly and I would lose signal. I was in an open area of the park so I didn't think that there would be any interference. I went to another area of the park same thing dropped the signal. Rather than send it back I figured I'd look around on YouTube for some help. Help I found. On the transmitter you can change the strength of the signal. if the four bars are flashing it's on the weak setting if they are solid then it's on the high setting. To change the setting all you have to do is push up on the trim button directly left of the right thumb stick as you turn on the power followed by syncing the craft to the transmitter up then down. I can now fly much greater area without loss of signal. This drone is the best starter drone you can start out with in my opinion. Out of the box it's ready to fly. Has nice steady hover, nice response to the controls in high mode, and pretty tough as we have had some hard hits into the grass. The Wi-Fi camera is a nice starter camera and helps to have when you get far away and lose your bearings. Also you can download the app which allows you to FPV real time as well as record videos and pictures. For the price I paid we are getting every pennies worth. Make sure you grab some extra batteries I bought some 780mah here on amazon didn't cost much and comes with a charger. I have heard you can fit up to a 1200mah in this drone.

    Requires ZERO Wind

If you're just getting into quad copter flying, choosing an inexpensive model to learn on first is paramount. Aside from looking for something cheap to start with, the main reason I went with the X5HW was mainly because of the available features, which you can't seem to find on another quads in this price range. The main feature I really wanted was altitude hold, and the X5HW fit the bill. I have a small micro Syma and a Hubsan X4, both of which have serious issues holding altitude. They all go up...down...up...down...up...down, absolutely no hovering ability for more than a few seconds, which makes trying to fly them frustrating. So, needless to say, I was looking forward to the X5HW's altitude hold, which seems to work decent. There is a little up and down variance, but for the most part, you don't have to worry about altitude on the X5HW, which allows you to focus on more important things.Aside from altitude hold, there is also headless mode. In short, headless mode simply takes out the frustration of learning backwards directions. Typically, pressing up is forward and pressing right makes the quad go right, when going away from you, normal operation. However, if you rotate the quad so it's coming at you, the controls will be reversed. Headless mode makes it so no matter what direction the quad is facing, right is always right and up is always forward, pretty cool. This works pretty well on the X5HW, but it takes about 5 seconds to calibrate after a 2 second press of the button, so it's best done on the ground after initial pairing and trimming. I did find that in headless mode sometimes when trying to rotate or spin in place, the quad would dip or lean to the direction I was trying to rotate and lose altitude, not sure why and was only experienced in this mode. The X5HW's biggest downfall is its weight. It's very light and wants ZERO wind to operate correctly. Even a 3-5 mph light breeze prohibits decent control. Even in high rate mode, I found giving the quad full stick was not enough. There were several times when the quad would not come back to me at all, even with a strong tail breeze, which should have helped it...not sure why this happened. Because even the slightest breeze can throw the quad from one altitude to another, getting decent video footage was near impossible for me.Speaking of video footage, the X5HW also has FPV, which I had a hard time with. The quad's camera will put out its own wifi signal and with the Syma app installed on your smartphone, you can pick up video straight from the camera. Great in theory, but not very functional in the real world. My particular phone, an ASUS Zenfone 2E, will automatically close my wifi connection if there is no internet, so after about 1-2 minutes, I lose the FPV feed and have to start all over. There is no setting in my Android 5.0.1 OS to remedy this, so flying in FPV is pretty much useless.*** BE AWARE OF THIS AND MAKE SURE YOUR OS HAS THE ABILITY TO IGNORE INTERNET FREE WIFI CONNECTIONS ***The wifi signal also does not get you very much distance. I found that about 50 feet was all I could get before the video signal cut out. The Syma App (SYMA FPV) even showed about a 25% signal loss at only 10 feet away, so don't expect explorer drone performance at this price point. When I am able to record video, the picture is extremely grainy, has heavy jello, poor focus and internal light balance frequently changes the brown, sandy desert I live in to a light blue hue, sometimes purple. I was not expecting GoPro performance on a $60 quad anyway, so it's not a big deal. Another thing to note is that flying in FPV is more for camera recording than navigation...there is just simply not enough time to look at your screen, especially in wind. Video footage is recorded on your smart device and hidden inside the SYMA folder and recorded in MOV format, so you will need to use VLC or Quicktime to view the files. The SYMA app will allow you to play the files straight from it, but it crashed anytime I attempted to do so. I hate the MOV format or anything to do with Apple like Quicktime, but I knew this going in.The construction of the X5HW is surprisingly decent. Having worked through my initial flight issues and battling 3-5 mph winds, It was inevitable that it would crash, and crash it did, several times with no damage. After crashing you have to pull both right and left sticks down and in towards one another to shut down the quad, which takes about 5 seconds for the rotors to stop spinning. During that time they WILL become nicked or possibly worse. The shutdown time could have been shorter to avoid this. Flight times were around 3-4 minutes the first few charge/discharge cycles, but grew to 5-6 minutes, with a charging time of about 90 minutes. Of course, flight conditions determine flight times, so battling a light breeze will diminish battery life sooner. If you want to learn from your mistakes without having to wait 1.5 hours, I highly suggest purchasing a few extra batteries.Overall, I think the X5HW is just ok for the price. It has decent altitude hold, headless mode is great for all beginners and the quad can take a hard fall and keep going. The lack luster performance in even the slightest breeze, poor camera performance and weak FPV signal strength take it to 3 stars. The X5HW can be flown without the cam attached, but I did not see an increase in performance or flight time. If you are looking for a beginner quad copter with headless mode and altitude hold, which are now standard features in all decent drones now, but don't care about the FPV camera feature, there are better options out there for less.
