Review: BIOS issues - I've bought this tablet to use it in Brazil. It was brought to me some weeks after the arriving in a friend's house in USA, so no tests were made until it reached my door in Brazil weeks after the purchase. For my disappointment the tablet has never worked as it should. Ever 10 attempts to turn it on, 8 times it enters in BIOS setup and get stuck there until the battery runs off... So I never know "when" I'l be able to use or not the tablet; it always dependes is it will enter BIOS or boot OK. Moreover, when it boots OK and I'm able to use it, I always have issues with the SD card; tablet says that the SD card must be formatted... The same SD card works VERY well in an other tablet I have (Kindle Fire 7), so the problem isn't the card, but the tablet. Unfortunately I was not able just return the tablet to desertcart because I didn't have anyone that could bring it back to US and make the devolution for me. I really would appreciate if I still have the opportunity to just exchange my CHUWI Hi8 Pro for an desertcart Fire 8 HD that, by the experience I have with the Fire 7, certainly would fulfill my expectations of a reliable tablet.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Okay Tablet, Great $100 Tablet - IA32 EFI will be a pain if you want Linux
*by J***M on September 20, 2016*

Comparing this to higher priced tablets is not exactly a fantastic idea. It only has 2GBs of RAM, and only a 32GB internal SSD, so you're not going to store much, and good luck getting past 3 tabs in Chrome. On top of that, the cameras and speakers are hilariously bad. But, if you're taking pictures with a tablet, you're doing it wrong. Hilariously wrong. And, I can forgive the meh speaker, because if you're listening to music with your phone or tablet speaker and expecting stellar quality, you're doing it wrong. Lastly, the small battery will leave you with a realistic maximum battery life of about 3 hours of normal usage. For comparison, my $300 Asus T100 gets about 6 hours of battery life with normal usage. But, for $100 you get an excellent bang for your buck. You get a quad core Cherry Trail Atom (comparable to desktops from mid 2000s) and a ~1080p display in an 8-inch tablet, and that's fantastic. The display has good color contrast, and is extremely bright. I keep it at 25% brightness, and even then it's slightly brighter than it needs to be. The CPU/RAM/SSD are speedy enough that as long as you aren't doing anything CPU intensive, the device is extremely responsive in Windows. Unfortunately, the device comes with Windows 10 built in. Windows 10 is a step back in terms of UI for touch devices like these, and forced reboots for updates are idiotic in $currentYear. I mean, seriously, Windows is the ONLY OS that needs to reboot to do normal updates. The only time I reboot my *nix machines (have a couple OSX machines for work) is because of kernel updates, and even then that's only for critical fixes. The fact that Microsoft hasn't figured out how to do patches without rebooting is hilariously bad. Updates take seemingly forever to run, and can't run in the background, so if you run low on battery, expect to have a chance of the battery dying mid-update because Windows took forever to update. I didn't bother using Android, and deleted it off the SSD upon first Windows boot. What I did try doing was installing Linux right away. These $100 tablets are a fantastic idea for cheap Linux machines as running GNOME 3.12 with a touch screen works fantastically. Unfortunately, only Debian bothered to fully support multi-arch, so you're limited to Debian multiarch, Linux Mint, and (dreadfully) Ubuntu. You can hack Arch Linux to work, but good luck. Rolling release isn't exactly a good idea on a device with no USB ports or Ethernet port. Anyways, the installer works fine, but make sure to use a network adapter that will work out of the box on an old Debian kernel out of the box. Also, a device that doesn't require external power as you aren't going to be outputting a lot of power through the USB C port... You're limited by both storage and memory, so every bit counts - I would highly recommend you avoid Ubuntu and Unity if at all possible, as you want a minimal as much install on these devices. Anyways, I digress, but these devices make for fantastic cheap Linux devices if you're willing to put in the work and are in need of a fun project.
