The thermostat base is mechanically and electrically connected to the wall mounting base with 2 machine screws, and has a lever protruding out the bottom of the unit that sets the desired temperature. I do NOT believe this model features a System OFF switch, so simply moving the setpoint down to 50 degrees is as close as you can get. I believe that the 1E50N-301 Thermostat includes the switching subbase with the Heat/Off function you desire. I'm not a pro but I've installed this unit on more than one millivolt furnace and had no problems. Unfortunately, none of these were in my own home so I can't go look at one of them for you. **Q: Have to replace a gas fireplace thermostat.
