To setup, you literally just hold the power button and the appropriate other button on the remote (corresponding to your brand) for about 3 seconds. That's it. The buttons on the remote are marked (small letters) with a code for the brand(s) - and there's a convenient chart printed right on the back of the remote. I put the batteries in it, held down the power button and the button for her TV until the light blinked (about 3 seconds), and it immediately worked perfectly.
