This didn't bother me because I use separate paper to follow the examples. If it was to be a gift I would have bought new. Here are the reasons this book in particular is an excellent drawing book for kids. ( and adults who don't draw) 1. The instructions stay with you to the end. You don't have a couple of pictures and end up with a picture at the end far more complicated than the instructions that were given to you. 2. The drawings start with simple shapes. This helps you actually learn to associate shapes with drawing to give you a concrete baseline when you want to draw on your own. 3. The end drawings are really cute! 4. The book covers a wide array of simple drawings and the steps are clear and easy enough to keep a kid from being discouraged. Would recommend this for a younger child just starting out with drawing/art but I can see how a child with intermediate or slightly more advanced drawing skills might find it too simple.
