## Overview

The SafeStraw Drinking Aid is a revolutionary tool designed specifically for individuals with dysphagia, allowing them to consume nectar-thickened fluids safely and independently. With its therapist-approved design, it addresses the challenges faced by over 15 million Americans, making drinking a secure and enjoyable experience.

## Description

The SafeStraw provides a limited bolus size by use of a fluid chamber, one way valve, and float. As the patient sucks on the straw, fluid flows through the valve and into the chamber. When the fluid travels through the chamber to the straw, the float rises. After around 6.2ml’s the float reaches the top of the chamber closing it off preventing the patient from receiving more fluid. Once they stop sucking, the float sinks to the bottom of the chamber. This break gives them time to control the liquid bolus and safely swallow. Once the float has reached the bottom of the chamber they can safely draw another 6.2ml’s of fluid. Any standard ¼" drinking straw will fit the tapered end of the SafeStraw device. If straw is too long, simply cut to desired length. This version is for use with THICK liquids

## Features

- The SafeStraw Drinking Aid helps patients with deficient oropharyngeal or oral motor skills drink safely. Patients with this type of dysfunction have difficulty consuming liquids because of their inability to control the liquid bolus. This difficulty with swallowing is often diagnosed as dysphagia, a condition shared by over 15,000,000 Americans and is treated by SLPs, PTs and Home Nursing Care.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: I can't find the right diameter straws! Very frustrating, seems they'd tell you that when you buy them. What brand works?**
A: Kroger Home Sense Striped Flexible Straws seem to work just fine (they come in packs of 100). The exact diameter is not critical though, because the end of the SafeStraw device is tapered

**Q: Does the patient have to be able to suck to use this?**
A: Yes, the patient must suck - this is a volume limiting drinking aid..

The Bionix SafeStraw helps patients with deficient oropharyngeal or oral motor skills drink safely. Patients with this type of dysfunction have difficulty consuming liquids because of their inability to control the liquid bolus. Pharyngeal muscles react slowly, and the patient loses fluid out of the oral cavity or aspirate. This difficulty with swallowing is often diagnosed as dysphagia, a condition shared by over 15,000,000 Americans and is treated by SLPs, PTs and Home Nursing Care.

**Q: What type of cup is recommended to you use with this straw**
A: Any cup works….It meters the amount of liquid the person gets. 1 teaspoon then cuts off preventing the person from aspirating. Also it can use Necter thick liquids but not honey thick. There is one that works for honey thick.

**Q: Can ot be used in cans**
A: My daughter had to use it with a thickener so she can’t drink from a can. The bottom is thicker so no it won’t fit into a can. Hope this helps.

This is an amazing product for people that have dysphagia or swallowing issues!

*by P***7 on Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2016*

This product has been a dysphagia lifesaver! I came back to order more so we can have more than 1 drink availalable at one time (i.e. coffee and water). We have an elderly parent with advanced Parkinson disease and serious swallowing issues. He has been told "no straws" by the speech therapist after several bouts of aspirational pneumonia and failed barium swallowing studies. He has major motor skill issues and couldn't use his straw cups with lids so he was spilling constantly! He had practically stopped drinking fluids out of frustration by the time this arrived. We have used it throughout the last few days and he has eagerly enjoyed it with hot coffee, iced tea, and water, with excellent results. I am so thankful someone invented this!! This product is not hard to keep clean. It is a hard plastic stem with a steel valve that comes out, and a flexible silicone stopper on the bottom, it is disassembled and washed in less than a minute. It seems to be made from very durable material. After assembly of the stem, you clip the bottom few inches off of a disposable straw (we like the bendy kind) and stick the straw on the stem.If could give this 10 stars I would.
