The one being questioned puts two fingers on the contacts and the the toy lights up (1 light = definately telling the truth; 2 lights = maybe telling the truth; 3 lights = maybe lying; 4 lights = definately telling the truth). We get lots of 2 and 3 light results, so it's less definative that my son hoped - kind of like the Magic 8 Ball that way. But he enjoys it.
