Based upon personal experience, though, I would recommend plenty of padding be placed beneath your sleeping bag, simply because humid air, or dew, can condense upon the tarp and that dampness can be felt through thin layers of cloth fabric beneath you while you sleep --- dampness that you might not notice until you awaken and feel it as a discomfort. If, in the future, I decide to go on a camping excursion and I have extra good padding and a plumpy sleeping bag, or even a thick throw rug, then I would definitely place them on my ground tarp. Normally, I prefer tarps that have 11 or high mills for strength, but the tarp I bought has surprised me because of its endurance. A pond, though, is a very different scenario than many tarps will undergo. What type of fish will be under the tarp? Will the tarp come in contact with the pond water? And what about other waterlife in the pond? Although the tarp could likely be used on a fish pond to cover it, you would have to consider if the fish and waterlife are capable or prone to nibbling the material of the tarp over a period of time. To resist algae, water insects, pond-visiting animals, and potentially nibblibg fish, you would want to consider the mills of strength in your tarp and the nature of its fabrication. How frequently will the tarp be removed? How long will it be kept on the fish pond? What about the pond's need for fresh air or sunlight?
