Have to push the battery edge against the curved contact, and then push down. The curved contact is in the hole nearest the clip and hinge. While holding the battery down on one side, slide the cover over while pushing it down. Previous to this, you should have identified where the tabs on the cover are going to fit into the hole. Then twist the cover clockwise to screw into place. This is best done in a well lighted room when you aren't under pressure. Then you won't be flustered. When I've tried to do this in a class, everything went seriously wrong. The cover rolled away and couldn't be found until class was over. Note: best to buy 2 of these tuners, because they get feeble after 20 minutes. Instead of replacing the battery every 20 minutes, just give the one tuner a rest and use a different tuner. This will make the batteries last weeks, instead of only an hour. I own 4 of these tuners. Two live in my backpack for orchestra, band, and lessons with kids. The other 2 live where I practice. These are the best clip on transposing tuners that I found when I looked online. And for beginning trumpets, saxes, horns, you can't expect the kids to be able to figure out a non-transposing tuner. **Q: Is this coated with black that becomes gooey and sticky like Snark?** A: I own 4 tuners. None of them have gone sticky. Why 4? 2 for my backpack and 2 at home. By switching back and forth, I can get more battery life. Half hour with one until it gets dim, then half hour with the other. Love THESE! Put if on Bb for treble clef baritone, put on F for my horn and then on C for bass clef baritone or for trombone. **Q: Where do you clip this onto a saxophone, in such a way that it is readable while playing?** A: Yes this is tricky. You may be able find a spot to pin it at the bell that's just about visible. You could also pin it on the screw that holds the neck in place. **Q: what a4 frequency: 430-450hz to you set it at for an alto saxophone?** A: Turn on. Short touches of on/off button will toggle between Mic and clip. I use "clip" on my horn during orchestra and band so I get a reading on my pitch, not the other musicians. Push the mode button until you see Eb. That is the right transposition for an alto sax. I leave the pitch number at 440. That would only be changed if you are playing with someone who can't tune to A440.
