OEM are for system builders who sell systems. They are typically bought in bulk, have less of a warranty and sold for less cost. When you buy a system such as HP, you deal with HP when there is a problem, not the manufacturer. That's the purpose of OEM. All drives sold to consumers for personal use are supposed to be retail, and I've checked drives multiple times along with having problems with a couple and they had their full warranty. Retail drives no longer come in retail boxes, to save money so you don't have a way of knowing without checking warranty status when you get the drive. For Seagate and probably WD too, the warranty period is from date of manufacture, not date of purchase. This I'm sure has cause confusion and has led some people to think they got an OEM drive because maybe they got an older one that had sat on a shelf for a year and when they checked a warranty there wasn't much left so they assumed the warranty wasn't for the listed time stated by the company. So be aware of all that.
