I use it in the washing machine after I tie-dye clothing to keep the colors from bleeding together. However, I have learned in my new "modern" washing machine it does not fill up with water fast enough and colors can sometimes bleed anyway. I have to mix the Synthrapol in water first and add it to the machine immediately or do it in a bucket, agitate the tie-dye clothing, and then pour it all in the washer. **Q: What is the difference between Synthraphol and Retayne?** A: Retayne fixes dye to fabric and should be used to wash fabric that bleeds or may bleed PRIOR to using in a quilt or other project. Synthrapol is a detergent that suspends dye particles in wash water so that they do not reattach to fabric. Under the best circumstances it can help salvage a completed quilt which has been found to include bleeding fabric(s). **Q: Can this be used along with Oxiclean in the washing machine? I need to soak clothing in hot water to remove stains but I want to prevent color bleed.** A: Yes no problem. Perfect for that. This is called backstaining and is exactly what it was meant to prevent. **Q: Can you use this Synthrapol without the recommended added soda ash?** A: Synthrapol is a detergent intended to wash excess dye out of fabric. Soda Ash is used in the dying process to help the fabric retain color better.
