    Romance with a twang.

*by T***S on Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2017*

There are a lot of layers to this single point of view romance. You can read it and ignore, but you'd be missing important things, like the ways and whys Patch fostered his hatred of his childhood, and how come he hates Tucker but is drawn to him, and why Tucker tries so hard to be nice to this ornery young man first time they see each other again, even though apparently Tucker is horrible. Baggage galore. If you have trouble with the way Patch speaks, and Tucker, then pay attention to where Patch is, his choices. Every setting speaks to his state of mind. This is masterful storytelling. It's all from Patch is dragged spitting and clawing back into his childhood town to deal with his parents' funeral and the sale of the farm. Nothing about his evolution is easy or simple or even clear to him most of the time. Particularly his messed-up obsession with Tucker. Many of the less-glowing reviews of this novel centered on the dialect of Southern that is rural east Texan. I'm from rural Montana, so the mannerisms and a little of their slang was familiar. The dialog did get a bit murky for me now & then. I may have missed a thing or two. But it's all clear enough in context, given the personalities, and would've lost something important had the author not stuck with rural east-Texas colloquialisms.I have never seen so many ways of saying "cock" in one book in my life. The sex scenes were unexpected in that only what Tucker wants that's shockingly new to Patch is detailed. I liked that.I loved the damn dog. :)I saw one review that seemed critical of how it ends. This is, ahem, a romance. Take away the happy-for-now or happily-ever-after, and it's not a romance. That reviewer's blaming their reaction on the writer, when the reviewer didn't understand what they were reading. Tsk.

    Dy-no-MITE! ...

*by B***O on Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2017*

Stick with this one through a first few chapters where you get to hate Tucker Briggs and wonder why in the heck Patrick (Patch) is fascinated by his boyhood crush. Because there comes an explosive scene that is so searing in its sexual heat and so unexpected in the way its conducted that you will be searching all over the floor for the lump in your throat that flew out of your face when it is over.Look, this is a book based on deep, unabashed, filthy and roaring sexual attraction. The 43-year-old Tucker and the 22-year-old Patch could not be a more incongruous coupling, but when you get through all the history and machinations surrounding these two, and the East Texas town in which this tale takes place, you will not put it down except to breathe deeply. The thing that holds it together, for me at least, is the brilliant use of Texas idioms and dialect throughout. Damon Suede has created a milieu and scene after scene which defines the territory, and allows Tucker and Patch to mark their territories accordingly.Shocking, surprising, salacious. Get it fast.

    Recommended with a caveat (spoilers)

Top notch writing mechanics and realistic plot for the genre. But I’ve got to give this 5 stars simply on the author’s depiction of Tucker. I know guys like this, grew up around them (although not cowboys). Mr. Suede has written truth with him and doesn’t shy from a whole characterization of bad with good. The relationship with Patch doesn’t gloss over problems. The caveat is personal. My hard limits include people who keep having kids without the least attempt to parent. And do it multiple times. Just spoiled the character for me. This doesn’t mean I think Mr. Suede should have written it differently - nothing false here. But by the end of this story I didn’t really care about Tucker’s HEA.I’m glad I read this book. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen a more realistic character in the genre. But I won’t read it again, unlike Hot Head.
