## Description

The legendary original soundtrack to Cowboy Bebop is finally available on vinyl! The Bebop crew is just trying to make a buck. This motley lot of intergalactic loners teams up to track down fugitives and turn them in for cold hard cash. Spike is a hero whose cool façade hides a dark and deadly past. The pilot Jet is a bruiser of a brute who can't wait to collect the next bounty. Faye Valentine is a femme fatale prone to breaking hearts and separating fools from their money. Along for the ride are the brilliant, but weird, hacker Ed and a super-genius Welsh Corgi named Ein. On their own, any one of them is likely to get lost in the sprawl of space, but together, they're they most entertaining gang of bounty hunters in the year 2071. Composed and performed by Yoko Kanno and the band Seatbelts, the music of Cowboy Bebop is one of the signature elements of the series. The energetic jazz-infused pieces rip and roar across the stars and are as indispensable as the crew of the Bebop themselves.

Review: Transcendant Yoko Kanno Sountrack - I find the animé to be enjoyable. Translation is often questionable and has "an affect on the landscape," of a non-Japanese speaker. The stories can be disjointed, confusing, and often feel rushed. This is no Studio Ghibli. I also didn't grow up with it, so that makes a difference. I have no formative memory of it, which can anchor just about anything inside a silo of "great," even when it's just pedestrian entertainment. Don't misunderstand. I like Cowboy Bebop, and plan to rewatch (the mark of a quality show, IMO.) The soundtrack is another thing, entirely. I'm still becoming familiar with Yoko Kanno, having loved Macross Plus for years, and after the live-action Netflix redo of Cowboy Bebop, Kanno's updated Cowboy Bebop soundtrack completely transcends that story, not unlike John Williams and Star Wars, and I cannot get it out of my head. The animé soundtrack reviewed here is no different, though produced 30 years apart. The music is timeless. Jazzy, and eclectic, the songs evoke instant memories of the show, and support the odd and disparate nature of the characters and environment. It's felt, rather than just heard. No Saturday morning cartoon music, or 90's, trendy, J-pop here (well, okay, a couple!) Yes, a few tracks are missing, but I won't go into that. Perhaps a 2nd version will add them later. I'd buy it in a heartbeat. The Ein Variant is the recommended listening choice. It comes pressed on opaque, two-disc, white and brown vinyl (is it still vinyl?) The sound is clean if a bit aged. The overall dynamics aren't very wide, and invoke a "TV sound." Most of the music is centered, mono-like, in the stereo field and is clean, if a bit distant-sounding. The percussion stands out, however. It is cleaner, and feels like it was mastered separately, and is the most powerful part of the music. The percussion fills the otherwise empty soundstage and sounds more modern, while the horns and other instruments play mostly in the center. It's an odd mix, but makes sense as this was made for TV before the advent of hi-def, widescreen, lossless (digital) audio. It's still quite engaging, as the music is just that good! There are other versions of this album. Red, orange, gold, blue, purple, etc. Marbled, metallic, and translucent, this colored vinyl (?) has a static, crunchy, "aged" sound, probably due to the "glitter" substrate that gives it the sparkly visual. Audiophiles of this soundtrack are urged to seek out the Ein Variant for listening, and the other colored versions for, perhaps, display as they simply don't sound as good.
