BUT, i cant surf with it for more than a few minutes. i have no idea why, but i get the blue screen of death repeatedly when its plugged into my laptop. but i bought it for tivo, so i was ready to use it with my tivo.all tivo literature says u HAVE TO HAVE a standard landline to complete initial setup. this is simply NOT TRUE. here is what u do:1. plug in the usb-2-ethernet adapter before powering on tivo. of course, make sure its hooked up to a broadband connection somehow.2. power up tivo, go thru setting up everything on your tivo3. when it says it has to dial out to complete installation, enter in dialing prefix ",#401" -dont forget the comma.4. it dials out, downloads anything it needs a whole lot faster than on a regular land line, and BOOM youre good to go.ENJOY! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great TiVo Accessory *by C***A on Reviewed in the United States on 18 September 2008* I read the reviews about people saying that the little door is flimsy and they didn't like it as a laptop accessory, but since I was going to use it for my TiVo Series 2 box and TiVo recommended it I took a deep breath and went for it. Turns out it was a good call. My TiVo is really close to my wireless router, tucked in with my entertainment system components, so I basically made the connections and never have to bother with it again. It doesn't ever get moved or removed, so once it's in place it's good to go. However, if someone actually had to run the ethernet cable some distance from the usb to the router, and ever tripped over the wire or otherwise jilted it, I can see how the little door on the usb would snap and that would be the end of it. What the picture doesn't show very well is that the door isn't just an access point, it's crucial to holding the ethernet cord in place (and at a really weird and fragile angle at that). Without it, the cord wouldn't sit right (or at all really) and you'd be SOL or have to jimmy it with some pretty strong tape. At that point, it wouldn't be worth the trouble, just replace it. Never had any problems with its performance (connects just fine, downloaded an Unbox movie in under an hour) so bottom line--if you're going to plug it in and forget about it, it's a great little product. ### ⭐ I'd rate it 0 if I could! *by T***2 on Reviewed in the United States on 30 May 2006* My first TiVo, purchased a year ago, was the reason I bought this adapter, because it is the only one that TiVo says it has tested and guarantees to work with their product. And the first one DID, although I wondered about how flimsy it seemed. Well, I used the included dongle to hook it up and no problems, saw the network, and has worked great.So enter into my household TiVo #2. This one has the built-in DVD recorder. So I dutifully trotted off and bought another Linksys adapter to hook it up too.Nothing but trouble - the first one I got home with, the little metal arms that hold the plastic door were broken, so no possibility of connecting.Back to Staples, where exchanges are easy at least. Got another one, and back home again, got it hooked up - it could see the network OK but kept losing connectivity! After much gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair, removed the known good adapter from TiVo #1, swapped with the NEW adapter, and guess what - now TiVo #2 is fine and #1 is intermittent! GRRRRRR! What a piece of junk.
