At first it seems anti-helpful. Since it attracts fruit flies to be trapped, for a while you will see MORE fruit flies. I'd say essentially no flies after maybe three days, or just an occasional fly. Take the top off and look inside, you see nothing, but look inside with a FLASHLIGHT and you see thousands of dead ones on the bottom.
