The leash is 36.5 inches long from end to end.This harness offers two styles of safety walking. The first style is with one end of the leash attached to the left side of the harness and the other end of the leash attached to the right side of the harness. This mode is great for helping give balance to the child and prevent trips and falls. Harnesses with a single attachment to the center of the back are known to cause trips and falls for the child. This harness will not do that is this style of harness walking.The other style is attaching the leash to just one side. When attached to just one side your child can walk close beside you. The leash will keep them at a close distance and prevent them from running away from you. Your child can still turn to face you in this style without them getting tangled our pulled awkwardly.This harness can also be used to help strap a child into highchairs and shopping carts. Simply buckle the waist strap around highchair or shopping cart seat to keep the child from climbing out.This product is not recommended for children who are just beginning to walk. Children that are beginning to walk lean forward frequently and put most of their weight on the straps. The straps in this products are not designed for such stress. BUT, after only one month, while using the harness, one of the side straps came apart at the seam. Fortunately, I was able to break my grandson's fall when the strap broke and there was not a serious injury. I did contact desertcart and the service rep was very helpful in providing information on how to return it. I am currently waiting for closure on this incident.
