The spring is built for larger people, the average or small folks may not weigh enough to compress the spring. Review: Uncomfortable - I used it for 1 day before packing it up and returning it. There's lots of padding, but it's really thin, so my arms and butt hurt after a couple of hours. Worst though, is the seat. It slopes forward, so you can't tilt back without keeping your foot pushing on something. I like a chair that I can sit in tilted back with my feet dangling or tucked under me. Weird, I know, for someone 6' and 300#, but my office chairs have always allowed for that in the past, and this one didn't. It's the most uncomfortable office chair I have ever purchased, and I wouldn't have done so if I had tried it out first.
