Review: First a word to prospective buyers: Contrary to the blurb published on this page, no CD was included with the copy of the book I received from desertcart Japan, a 1999 printing with a different cover from that shown. This book was ordered new, directly from desertcart Japan, not from a re-seller.) However, the text itself is excellent. Unlike some other volumes in this Oxford series, it describes not only the sequence of composition of the Variations, and the evidence for that sequence (Part I), but the variations themselves (Part II). Many excerpts from Beethoven's sketches are presented in Part I, as well as complete transcriptions in Part III: you'll probably want to have a keyboard handy to hear what Beethoven had been thinking. While some of this discussion will fascinate mainly professional musicologists, as a writer I found it interesting to see how Beethoven planned the overall "dramatic" structure of the set. The composition had been interrupted for several years, mostly while he was working on the Missa Solemnis; the later-composed variations (which include some of the earliest in the set) had a very significant role in the architecture of the work. I spent several enjoyable evenings working through Part II this book with a score and my iPod.
