I think the large would be a bit big in a 5 inch vise . So I would go with a medium . **Q: Is this item sold as a set of two jaw protectors (one for each vise jaw)? The description leaves some doubt.** A: Yes. One set... a jaw protector for each vise jaw. **Q: Is the new improved version being sent now and / or is it possible I would receive the older version?** A: the older version should be all gone. **Q: Will they hold a gun stock with out marring or denting for checkering?** A: It will hold a gun stock, but it's hard plastic and would very likely mar/dent the finish ... But, that is exactly how they are advertised. Magnet strength is good. I used them on a 5 inch vice, so I trimmed a little off both ends. Not ideal, but not a product problem, a vice problem.
