During this time she was one of France's biggest musical stars -- working with national treasure Serge Gainsbourg, winning the Eurovison contest in 1965 (representing Luxembourg!), and scoring hit single after hit single. That she wasn't a technically great singer, and indeed came off a little screechy at times, didn't matter at all. Instead, her na<ve charm, fresh-faced looks, sense of style, and the songs Serge wrote for her combined to make her an icon. Many of the songs here are French pop classics, and for good reason. "Poup,e de Cire Poup,e de Son" was the Eurovision winner and it's catchy as chicken pox. "Teenie Weenie Boppie" is deliriously catchy Continental pop (with an anti-LSD message), "Les Sucettes" is the cutest song you're likely to ever hear about oral sex, and "Baby Pop" is wonderfully weird psych-pop. These are the obvious highlights, but the disc is jammed with loads more songs that still sound fresh and fun four decades later. RPM's packaging is filled with album covers, photos, and liner notes that tell of how Gall became disillusioned with the kind of innocent-sounding but actually quite pervy songs Gainsbourg was writing for her, driving her to work with German producers and focus on the German market instead. Nevertheless, the tracks she recorded with him are classic French pop and this collection is vital to anyone who has even the remotest interest in it. ~ Tim Sendra

In this brilliant collection that spans 1963-68 France Gall is a girl with attitude; at times punky, at times baby cute but always seductive in a carefree and seemingly oblivious way. If the songs on this album had been sung in English they would not have appealed to me. It is the female vocal in the Gallic tongue sung with youthful vitality that makes listening to this album so enjoyable to me.I enjoy all the tracks so I don't skip any and some of my favourites include: "Made in France", "Teenie Weenie Boppie", "Laisse Tomber Les Filles", "Nefertiti", "Les Sucettes", "Cet Air Lá", "Bebé Requin", "Baby Pop", "Dady Da Da", "Le Temps De La Rentrée", "Les Rubans Et La Fleur", "Quand On Est Ensemble", "Rue De L'Abricot" and "Bloody Jack." Also, there are two versions, one in French and the other in Japanese, of the 1965 Eurovision winner "Poupée De Cire Poupée De Son" both of which are very good.The album's duration stretches to 55 minutes and 43 seconds and has excellent sound quality. A 12 page booklet that accompanies the cd contains a mini biography and iconic record sleeve pictures of the very attractive France Gall.If you want music that is nostalgic (even before my time), upbeat and fun to lift your mood during these gloomy days as I did this year, then this highly enjoyable album would be a great choice.Very highly recommended.

Featuring 22 tracks recorded between 1963 and 1968, this is the ultimate introduction to the ultimate Yé-Yé singer with the ultimate Yé-Yé sound. This really is pop music of the highest order and it is truly irresistible. The over the top and sometimes complex musical arrangements are breathtaking at times and they compliment Gall's lush girly vocals perfectly. Sexy yet deliberately naïve; the pace is relentless and the quality never falters.Exactly half of the songs here were composed by Serge Gainsbourg, including the infamous 'Les Sucettes' (about a girl who liked aniseed-flavoured lollipops as far as Gall was concerned) and Gall's version of 'Bloody Jack' (which is a lot smoother sounding than Bardot's version). The album closes with Gall singing 'Poupee De Cire Poupee De Son' in Japanese.Clocking in at 55 minutes and housed in a jewel case, the booklet features brief notes (in English) and photos of some of the original record sleeves.

It's easy to dismiss Yé-Yé music, but it'll have you feeling happy in no time at all, perhaps even have you dancing around. This compilation (55.43 mins) has great sound quality, it comes with a good 10 page colour booklet that has various pics of Ep covers etc. The music on the whole is very well crafted, written (half are written by the great Serge Gainsbourg) most of the songs have great melodies - its a real treat and a pleasure to listen to this cd. This is joyous, happy and fizzy pop. Highly recommended - let your self go, let the happiness wash over you.

The famous early total ye ye stuff AND the end of the 60s more subtle stuff. Very nice package in every way obviously devised by people who know their stuff. Wasn't really a fan before this.

Excellente surprise que cette compilation dont le texte du livret est en anglais (mais très compréhensible pour des personnes qui ont des notions d'anglais) Cette compilation regroupe, entre autres, les chansons des années '60, écrites par Serge Gainsbourg. On ne peut pas dire ici que toute les chansons écrites par Serge Gainsbourg et chantées par France Gall figurent sur cet album puisqu'il en manque au moins une (mais de 1972) "Frankenstein" qui n'a jamais été éditée jusqu'à présent en CD. De Gainsbourg et France Gall, on peut aussi signaler, en passant (et bien-sûr non présente sur cet album) la chanson "Pauvre Lola" ...avec le rire de France Gall en fond sonore (!), exclusivement chantée par Serge Gainsbourg sur son album "Gainsbourg Percussions" (1964) et non crédité.On peut peut-être trouver dommage que les titres ne soient pas classés chronologiquement ou alors que les titres de Gainsbourg n'aient pas été regroupés ensemble, histoire de se faire une idée plus précise de sa contribution. Les autres titres sont un bon choix, même s'il était difficile de piocher parmi tous les titres de cette période. Par exemple, "Sacré Charlemagne" a été oublié, mais certains diront que c'est peut-être une bonne chose (mais en tout cas pas moi qui apprécie toutes le périodes musicales de France). En fin de CD, nous avons l'excellente surprise de découvrir deux titres rares : "Bloody Jack" qui est une autre version de la chanson "Teenie Weenie Boppie" (avec des paroles différentes mais bien avec la même musique) ainsi qu'une des versions traduites de la chanson "Poupée de Cire, Poupée de Son", ici, en japonais. Il existe aussi une version en italien ou en allemand... Pour les Bonus, ce sera tout ici mais ce n'est déjà pas si mal.Autre parenthèse : Pour les amateurs d'autres raretés sur France, je ne saurai que trop conseiller le CD japonais "L'anthologie" qui est aussi une compilation mais qui regroupe en plus deux autres bonus : une autre chanson en japonais "Un prince charmant" (très jolie version) et surtout une chanson rarissime en duo avec Mireille Darc "Ne cherche pas à plaire". Seule la photo recto du CD n'est pas un choix très heureux (allusion -encore- aux "Sucettes", alors que la chanson n'y figure même pas...) mais vous pouvez retourner le livret, si vous le désirez, pour faire apparaître une photo différente de France et même assez originale d'ailleurs. Le titre en japonais "Poupée de Cire, Poupée de son" est également présent...Pour en revenir à ce CD anglais de France Gall mais avec des titres en français, sauf celui en japonais, il faut reconnaître qu'il est très bien réalisé et très agréable à l'écoute. S'il fallait en choisir un de cette période, ce serait au moins celui-là ! Le livret est bien conçu et reprend certaines des pochettes des 45 tours/4 titres du début de la carrière de France.Avec une photo absolument adorable de France Gall sur le recto du livret, vous ne pouvez que craquer en vous procurant sans tarder ce CD indispensable pour compléter votre collection. Vous pouvez acheter les yeux fermés, vous ne serez pas déçu !
