Review: Great Chess Set! - Just got the set today and I am extremely pleased with it. The pieces are beautiful and heavily weighted. To me, the knights are one of the most important pieces for the aesthetics of a set and these knights, with the wild manes and open mouths are beautiful. All the other pieces are proportional with tall bishops and substantial rooks. I am always a little disappointed with a set that has nice or even just fair knights but puny rooks. That is not the case with this set. Only a few things could have been better, and they are all very subjective, are just my opinion, definitely are minor, and not enough to give the set anything but five stars. Here goes: the pieces are not shiny, the queen is just a little too tall I think, and the bases on the king and queen are a shade too big, almost filling up most of a 2.25 x 2.25 inch square. Everything else including the other proportions is just great. Even though the pieces have kind of a dull flat finish, there are no discernible seams. The reversible, silicone mat (black and white on one side and green and white on the other) is nice, thick, and foldable. It is a bonus even though I prefer a leather or wood board and may not use the silicone one. I have heard silicone mats need to be cleaned frequently. The Tournament 4X Weighted Pieces "Best Chess Set Ever" may not be the very best ever but it is pretty darn close for sure and was a great buy during desertcart Prime Days. I could not pass it up. I love the set.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does the silicone board come flat or rolled?**
A: Folded in the box. Light fold lines are normal and play fine. A night under heavy books flattens it, or use a hair dryer on low heat, then books. Not flat? We replace it.

**Q: How big are the pieces compared to a normal chess set?**
A: Bigger than most. 4X king: 11.4 cm, 95 g, about twice a home-set king. 3X king: 10.3 cm. Full chart above.

**Q: What is the difference between the 3X and the 4X set?**
A: Size and weight only. 4X: 11.4 cm quad-weighted king. 3X: 10.3 cm triple-weighted. Everything else is identical.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Perfect! Modern or classic? (Cool knight mane vs regular knight))
*by E***. on September 7, 2026*

Perfect, exactly what I wanted! After reading some of the reviews here I had many doubts about what should I order. My conclusions - tldr -get the 4x *MODERN* if you want the cool looking knight and if you'd like the off white \cream color . So it took me some good amount of time to find out what should I order to get the best edition . It appears that there are deal breakers differences between the classic vs modern editions, and some of the reviewers here. Looking after unboxing videos on YT, I noticed that they have received an ugly looking set for (my taste), which later I understood that was referred as the "classic edition" The Amazon page have some nice looking chess pieces and I wanted that exact set as advertised. The modern 4x set has covered everything that is shown in the picture- arabic style knight mane, cool bishop with flame like miter. The rook look astounding with 8 edges vs 4 in the 3x edition (at least from what I have noticed in yt) The 3x White pieces have bad contrast for some ppl, so in the 4x the pieces are more off white and have better finish as I was told. I had no problems with the silicone board, no creases or anything bad . No googly eyes inside the box for some reason tho i don't care. The pieces are heavy in a good way, and the only down side is that the package doesn't fit great in a backpack or likewise. It doesn't come with a travel case either, just the box itself.
