## Overview

The Big Gator Tools MDG1000NP V-Drill Guide is a precision-engineered, portable drill guide made from heat-treated nickel alloy steel. It supports 17 metric drill sizes (3mm to 9.5mm) and guarantees perpendicular drill bit alignment on various surfaces, including flat, round, and square materials. ## Description

Portable Drill Guide for 17 metric drill sizes: 3, 3.3, 3.5, 4, 4.2, 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6, 6.5, 6.8, 7, 7.5, 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5mm. Heat treated for durability like drill bushings. It’s like having a portable drill press anywhere! Straight perpendicular alignment wherever you go. Drill Straight – Every Time!

Review: Well made. Very handy. Seems pricey but worth it. - Great little thing. Well-machined. Used it so far with wood drillbits but tested with a titanium coated HSS & didn’t seem to have a problem (might worry about heat buildup if drilling thick metal but take it slow). Pity it doesn’t go below 3mm but suspect that with bits less than 3mm being a bit more fragile they might risk catching & breaking. Obviously not as good as a drill press, but more convenient, better for tight spaces & cheaper even at what seems a bit of a steep price. Works well held on by hand (on wood at least) - just make sure that drill bit is straight in hole so it doesn’t catch - but would imagine better results could be had if clamped in place. Not had reason to use the feature but allows drilling into a square corner using groove on base which a drill press might struggle with without a jig.
Review: Takes the guesswork out of drilling straight holes - This is a product that I didn't know existed and didn't even know I needed until a few days ago. I was looking for a way of making sure I drilled holes straight through 36mm MDF board, so the screws came out in the right place on the other side without wandering, not that easy to do. I looked at small portable drill presses, but these seemed awkward to use and rather expensive. Then this product popped up in my search, a well machined block of steel that guides the drill bit accurately through the workpiece. It's a simple idea but works really well and is very nicely machined. It's the sort of tool I like, a real little gem, and it will be staying in my toolbag at all times. Costs a few quid but more than worth it if you are going to use it regularly.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: I would have thought that drill bits would gradually ream out the holes?**
A: You would think so, wouldn't you. But I have been using mine for a couple of years now and it is still working as new. I think the reasons are: 1) There is obviously a need for a very small clearance between the OD of the drill bit and the ID of the Gator hole, in order that the drill doesn't simply bind in the hole. The clearance allows the drill to pass through the Gator readily, but still provides the directional accuracy you need for most jobs. Secondly you start drilling only when you have actually sunk the drill onto the workpiece surface - so the main cutting tip of the drill isn't in rotational contact with the Gator's internal surface. Thirdly, I suspect the geometry of a twist drill is primarily designed to create the initial chip at the tip of the bit, and then enable that material to move up and away from the workpiece. It is not designed to 'dig in' to the sides of the hole. Although you can open out a hole (especially in soft material) by willfully 'waggling' the drill to engage the shank sides with the inside of the hole, my guess is that, unlike a reaming tool, the twist drill geometry isn't set up to cut into the sides. And perhaps that last point is mainly why it doesn't seem to wear much. Hope this helps.

**Q: Which country is this manufactured in please? Does it actually say anywhere on it or or the packaging? Thanks.**
A: Hello, The V-Guides are manufactured in the USA and it states this on the packaging and the V-Guide itself.

**Q: What's the depth of the 3.5mm hole?**
A: The V-DrillGuide is 22mm high, as in, if it is standing on a flat surface. The hole depth to the V is 17mm, as in, if it is placed on a corner or round.

**Q: are slot sizes same as intended hole diameter or wider?**
A: The V-DrillGuide holes are precisely machined to fit the corresponding drill size so are the intended diameter.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great little tool within limits

The drill guide is not a replacement for a pillar drill, but it is very handy when you need to drill holes in places a pillar drill couldn't reach. I used it a lot on a recent project and was very pleased with it. Accuracy is very good if you can hold the guide firmly in place whilst drilling. I have found that to be difficult sometimes as it's not very big and clamping it is sometimes difficult. I'm not enthusiastic about having to hold the guide down with one hand whilst drilling a few inches away with the other, but that's what I've had to do a number of times. It ain't cheap! In addition to the high sticker price, they have carefully selected the hole sizes so that you are quite likely to need the bigger size as well. That is getting to be serious money. It is by no means a universal solution for drilling accurate holes. It cannot handle any drill bit where the cutting edge is wider than the shaft, for example, masonry bits, Forstner bits or hole cutters. There is no way to set a depth stop (apart from marking the drill bit with tape) In summary, it's a big help drilling accurate holes where a pillar drill wouldn't reach, but it has its limitations.
