Review: High quality device for high quality recording and playback - Although I have yet to experiment with the multitude of settings, I can say the XY Stereo is outstanding. Aside from the quality of the recordings, I am impressed by the build quality and ease of use. All the knobs and buttons are firm and positive, and the menu system is a doddle! The screen is easy to read and has an adjustable contrast for comfort. Although photos make it look substantially larger than the alternative I was considering (the ZOOM H1), it's really very pocket friendly; not the lump it appears. For in-the-field monitoring, I bought some Audio-Technica ATH-M40X headphones which power easily directly from the ZOOM's line-out, providing a purely flat reference. Highly recommended for saving a lot of time and energy. Using these headphones revealed to me just how much detail the ZOOM's microphones can pick up! They are really amazing. That's not hyperbole - I am actually amazed by what tiny detail can be clearly recorded. There are already so many reviews of this device available here and elsewhere, so I'll not clutter the place with repetition. Suffice to say - it's great. UPDATE: Can also be used as an extremely high quality Mp3 player for music, audio books (in the right file format) etc. After connecting the ZOOM to a PC and entering USB > SD Card Reader mode, files can be dropped into the SD card's folders, and played back in the same way as recorded files. Excellent sound quality and album tracks played in the correct order, which apparently some dedicated Mp3 players inexplicably have trouble with. A very handy bonus feature.
Review: Initial reactions good... shame about the manual! - I am writing this review a bit early to be honest. I have only tried the H2n briefly and certainly haven't 'put it through its paces' as yet. I must say though, it's an impressive piece of kit. The few test recordings I made sounded beautifully crisp and clear, with a good display screen to keep you informed. If I am being critical I guess that I find the multi-function main switch a little 'vague' but actually I was aware of that from reading other reviews — but I certainly don't think it's all that bad and I am sure that with regular use the traits of the switch will be forgotten. It does the job very well and so if you read other reviews which mention the 'soft, vague' switch then I wouldn't let that worry you (it's fine with me... and I am a fussy old geezer!). The overall build is nice quality and I can see me using the microphone for most of my projects. I do have more expensive and sophisticated mics but they are certainly not as portable or quick to setup as the H2n. I have since invested in the accessory kit as I feel the H2n needs a nice padded case and windshield... and the other items in the accessory kit will come in handy too I reckon. I paid just over £20 for the accessory kit on desertcart and I believe that's extremely good value. Admittedly the mini-tripod is a bit naff, but it'll do the job. The value is mainly in the lovely case, decent windshield, cute remote control (with extension lead too!), and even a main adaptor. I must say that the 'dummy mic handle' in the accessory kit is a great idea, either for slotting the H2n into a standard microphone holder... or as a 'hand-grip' for the odd occasion. I must find something to have a gripe about though! I was rather miffed to discover that in my H2n box there was a very impressive printed manual(s) which actually consisted of three manuals measuring about 1/2inch thick. Almost every language under the sun in it but no English!!! I was rather amazed. I have since obtained a PDF English Manual online but can't believe that all the documentation that came with the H2n did not include English. A lot of gadgets these days you can fathom out without a manual, but the H2n is quite a complicated device with many options and settings. I pity anyone buying this who hasn't got internet access etc. Anyway, there's the good (and the bad) about the H2n. As I mentioned, this is a very early review so I can't say I have tested the H2n much yet. Time will tell whether it continues to impress me — if I discover anything worthy of note I may add to this review at a later date. So far though, the H2n seems to be a little belter!!!!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can I connect this directly to my Canon DSLR for sound recording?**
A: I have a canon legria hg 25, okay it's not a DSLR but I have Canon DSLR's also and am a semi pro video maker and photographer. I bought this recorder for two reasons and one of them was to link directly into my camcorder to use it solely as a microphone. It works superbly. I don't know which DSLR you have but as long as it has a standard microphone 'IN' port then you should have no trouble. You will of course need to buy a male-to-male 3.5 audio cable which goes from the Zoom's headphone socket to your camera's microphone 'IN' port. You should go into the camera settings and turn OFF the mixing capability as mixing is where the camera may try to still use its own on-board microphone as well and mix both sound sources together. For optimum results I turn the camera audio gain (input sensitivity level) down to one-fifth of maximum and then use the Zoom microphone dial to fine tune the overall input level. If you camera has an audio level meter then try to make sure that when the room is silent and the microphone should be hearing nothing that the level bar drops all the way to nothing and only rises when a sound is made by you or some other source... if the level does not drop to zero during silence then you will pick up an audible background hum... this is common to almost any microphone where the level settings have not been tweaked for optimum performance. Finally the unit is superb. Okay it's a plastic body and the tripod mount thread is plastic too so if you tighten it too much you will just ruin the thread but as far as how it works... you won't do better. For USB recording, go for the Blue Yeti. I have both microphones and cannot fault the audio quality of either.

**Q: hi!Does the Zoom H2N have a loging system for tracking the recordings?**
A: Hi David, not sure what you mean exactly but I think the answer I can give you is that when you record each time it gives each recording it's own file name name I.e. Zoom001, Zoom002 and so on. When I've recorded my band , I've recorded each song separately and therefore they are separate files with the zoom number running progressively. I also use it in the house when I'm practicing and working on new sounds, and I can still say the quality is superb. Once you connect to your mac or PC, the files can then be renamed as you wish. I record in mp3 format for what I need and can say that in tiff or raw format it will be even greater. I've just bought a mains adaptor, and it fits in my compact srl camera case a treat. You won't be disappointed , good luck if you buy! Ps, I have a friend who owns a media production company, and he swears by this product, I only found out about that after I had bought it, so that was a reassuring testament. Happy new year, hope this helps you. Regards paul

**Q: I want to directly link into my mixer to recordour karaoke performances without external "noise/sounds" so that we have just our track and singers.**
A: Yes you can take feed from mics and other mixed source to H2n

**Q: I'm looking for something to record bird song that I can then connect and download to my pc. Will this be suitable?**
A: I don’t think the internal mics will capture individual bird song. An external directional mic will be needed to achieve satisfactory results.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is how to make a recording machine for ordinary people.
*by G***S on 14 May 2025*

This is a great piece of kit, clear instructions, good method of setting up, the five mics in three easily accessed settings, easy to start and stop recordings, and to review the recordings on headphones, and an easily accessed lo cut setting to reduce background noise, and a simple dial for adjusting recording volume, a great simple tool for high quality tracks, well done.
