I guess to protect from rust, etc. This builds up on the edge which maybe gives the appearance of damage that's been reported? This comes off with one or two passes on the stone. All the chisels sharpened up to hair popping sharp in minutes. All of mine are almost perfectly flat. The 1 inch has a slight hollow on the back, but it's very slight and doesn't impact performance. In use they hold an edge for a fair amount of work and then respond well to stropping with a bit of compound to restore the edge. Very happy with these... They should give years of service. They (Stanley) say they are virtually indestructible. but I don't want to put it to the test, I'd say you get a better finish and and don't blunt your chisels as easily if you use a mallet. The best mallet going is one made in the USA called a wood is good mallet but they are expensive, they appear on eBay occasionally for a reasonable price. **Q: Does anyone know what grit is on the oilstone, there are 2 sides to it and can't find the information.** A: The rougher side is for grinding and smoother side for sharpening and honing. **Q: What grits does the sharpening stone have?** A: Not 100% but they are weak.
