It is passive.It gives you the ability to control you audio levels with very easy to get to controls. Gives you the ability to switch your inputs to line or mic, which will give you better sounding audio if you match your inputs! I use it because my outputs are professional(XLR), but the inputs in DSLR's are pro-sumer(1/8 stereo mini). It is very hard to control you audio level from a DSLR camera. The device also fits under the camera securely and looks very professional,versus having all these adapters and cables hanging out all over the cam just waiting to get pulled out! **Q: How does the work with a Canon t3i DSLR? Trying to get two mikes into one feed isn't doing it for me with just a Y adapter.** A: The Beach Tek has 2 inputs. Put one mic into one input and mic #2 in the other input. the 1/8" mini goes into the camera and takes care of the audio from the two mics. One will be on the left channel and the other will be on the right channel. You should not need a 'y' adapter. The Beach Tek is set up to handle up to 2 mics and that is why the 1/8" is a stereo output into the Canon T3i **Q: Ok,i can attach to my camara,but what about to mytripod?** A: You absolutely can. Not only is there a screw on top to attach the camera to it, there is a screw hole on the bottom to attach your tripod's camera plate.
