They go in an espresso machine as a paper wrapped block so that they're easy to clean out. You dont open the bags. They're expensive and you'll get a better coffee from a bag of ground beans. It's not like it's a big hassle to clean out the espresso "scoop". **Q: Can these pods compostable or otherwise recyclable?** A: As far as I'm aware they're compostable. I find it works best if the illy logo on the pods face upwards and give it a tiny tamp. Good fresh taste!
