My application need is for my kitchen exhaust fan which exits into attic.** A: NOTE: by most state's codes; nothing should be openly venting into the attic. I can run through the attic, but needs to be vented outside. That said, the flapper is spring loaded and is opened by the force of the airflow created by your exhaust fan. I suspect it can be mounted vertically, just make sure the flappers are oriented so they open in the direction of airflow (upward) when the exhaust fan comes on.
