    Solid banjo for beginners

*by A***R on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 April 2016*

This is a solid instrument for those, such as myself, who wanted to experiment with the banjo. It looks very pleasant, and is generally built to a good standard. It is a bright, loud instrument -- though this can be tempered by removing the resonator, a simple enough process, or by improvising a mute. The rosewood fretboard is decent, and all the materials feel secure and unlikely to break when used by someone as clumsy as me.The only criticisms I have are ones to be expected for an instrument of this price:-the strings that come with it are awful, so I went out and bought some elixir strings which were not only nicer to play one, but also produced a more friendly tone;-the tuning pegs are pretty cheap. They generally hold the tuning, but can be imprecise to turn, and occasionally slip. I plan to replace them at a later date, as it's relatively inexpensive;-there's also no setup guide. However, you can easily find out online how to position the bridge etc.I recommend for people to by some metal fingerpicks and perhaps even a case with the banjo. It will make your life much easier. For a budget instrument, however, you can't ask for more. For complete beginners -- that is, people with little to no music experience generally -- this will be a fantastic instrument almost straight out of the box. For those like myself who already play other instruments, investing in some new strings and pegs will make this a greater introduction to the banjo (especially if you can pick it up used for under £100 as I did).

    Excellent beginner Banjo

*by B***D on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 January 2023*

Beautifully made and an excellent place to start playing a Banjo. I've had mine 9+ years and still enjoy practicing with it. Worth every penny. It stays in tune well, has a nice finger board and quality neck. Nothing has deteriorated in 9 years! Even my playing has improved! I now have a Deering Seirra 5 string with A mahogany neck. This is not the place to start though. This Stagg Deluxe is great value for money and is an excellent instrument to play. You can buy it with confidence in my opinion and yes, this is a genuine review. 👌😊

    Better than many cheap banjos

*by G***R on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 July 2021*

Stagg BJW-Open 5 String. This banjo usually sold for £120-£200 but Amazon decided to sell the stock much cheaper and I got it for £67. I'm a sucker for a bargain. I don't need a cheap banjo I have better banjos. But I got it anyway. I have tried one or two of the many cheap brands flooding the market which sell for £100-£150 and this is much better. The rim is quite shallow and so yes it does have a slightly hollow sound which is a bit thin and lacking depth. But it is less hollow. less thin and with more depth than those. And it has a proper neck connection. No screw through the heel job here. I wouldn't have bought it if it did. And the top of the rim is properly shaped (bevelled).Of course Stagg have been around for years and rebadge some not so great cheap banjos, which Amazon will include this review with, but this is OK. The neck is nice, the nut looks better than plastic and the tuners work as well or better than other banjos with guitar tuners that I have tried. I think the black head gives it more mellowness but it's still quite bright. I'll be replacing the somewhat horrible tailpiece -it's ok but this type is a pain the restring. I don't expect cheap banjos from Amazon or even more expensive banjos from box shifters to be set up. However this was a surprise. All the hooks holding the tension ring down were properly tight. That's a rarity. Put the bridge in the right place and you're ready to go. The action is great and the intonation fine. Both better than much more expensive banjos I've bought from non specialist banjo shops/box shifters. If i was going to guess a comparable banjo as I right I'd probably go for an Epiphone MB100. I have a Luna 5 string and with the resonator off they are quite similar (Luna being part of Dean).
