If the lock release requires you to push and pull to get the lock to travel then the lock release is fitted incorrectly and the door lock is too tight and is pushing against the silver gate on the lock release, this puts a strain on the levers inside and stops the lock release operating freely, in which case you will need to adjust your lock release installation to address this issue.
