If the child lays it down for about 20 minutes, it will go to sleep mode. There is a way to move it to a quiet mode in which it will still light up and be somewhat stimulating. There is an off mode to silence the toy if necessary. The noises are cute, and my child loves them, but it would be better if there was a way to at least control the volume. **Q: Did anyone else’s have a smell?** A: I didn’t notice a smell with mine. **Q: Can the sound be turned off for this toy? Wondering if it could entertain kids on a long flight...** A: The sound cannot be switched off unless the toy itself is switched off. **Q: How to clean without removing paint? It's cute as can be but is a dirt/hair magnet!** A: We have just lightly rubbed a mild baby wipe over ours to remove dirt & lightly sanitize. We have noticed some of the paint from the rubbery part was already starting to wear off prior to the first cleaning just from the petting action involved with the pet’s commands.
