A bit gruesome, kinda puzzling in some places, but fun

Kinda gruesome at times (starting with the cover!) ... but it's a Corben horror story, what did I expect? Some pages of breathtaking art, some surprising and interesting story twists, some puzzlements. A lot of fun.The story begins in the pre-historic northern taiga, with a brother and sister fleeing pursuers from two menacing tribes. A rather startling but effective transition takes the story into the 1930's (or thereabouts) as an arrogant young New Englander searches for an isolated backwoods community and a young woman he encountered at college. While the action entertains, questions pile up. How did the brother and sister in the opening episode get into that predicament? There are a brother and sister in the main, "modern" chapters of the story, too -- are they descendants? reincarnations? of the earlier pair? One of them is evidently now a shapeshifter -- how'd that come about? And so on. I mean, I'm not asking for everything to be laid out in a flow chart, but a lot of things are still open-ended at the story's conclusion. From time to time a narrator appears, a one-eyed old crone who also occasionally takes part in the action. She's nameless here, but reappears in the same role as "Mag the Hag" in Corben's Murky World, currently being serialized in Heavy Metal. In the final chapter, Corben pulls a Mel Gibson: a group of Indians appears, has a conversation in Tlingit -- no subtitles -- and fades back into the forest. Hmm, wonder what that was about. And following that, a couple of other characters start speaking Tlingit to each other.Still a fun read, just one you'll be puzzling over the details of for a while.

    Great,except for some loose ends.

I've been a fan of Mr.Corben for over 40 years and greatly enjoy his work including his newest offering .Everything you have come to expect in his art work and story telling is present in "Rat God".Having said that,I thought the story had a few loose ends that were never cleared up that detracted from the narrative. For one, the character Chuk has the ability to change into a panther but appears to be the only denizen of Lame Dog to be able to do this. How did he come to have this unique ability? No explanation is ever given. How did Zedon Peck become the leader of Lame Dog what with him being an outsider ? And why do some the citizens of Lame Dog appear rat- like themselves? If there was some sort of interbreeding going on its never mentioned.Just a few of questions that came to mind as I was reading.

loved this book , weird, trippy, cool, creepy, creative, recently fell in love with corbens work. just got 'shadows on the grave', totally recommended, a 280 or so pg black and white collection of horror stories, like EC or twilight zone kind of thing.
