What is the actual depth from the inside from bottom to top without the tray inside?** A: minimum inside height is 6". **Q: If left outstide in the rain, would the contents inside get wet? (and rust my tools?)** A: This box is rain tight while sitting upright so tools wont get wet, but will still rust from the damp air. To store tools outdoors without rusting you need a lid that is air tight with a rubber gasket. **Q: When looking at the pictures, there appears to be a molded piece in the bottom for holding paint jars. Is this piece removable?** A: I think that piece is part of the paint jar set. It's misleading because it is not part of the paint box. The only separate part is the tray.
