## Description

Told with beauty and grace, this Cinderella story from Ai-Ling Louie is brought vividly to life by Caldecott Medal-winner Ed Young’s soft, glowing illustrations. Half-starved and overworked by her stepmother, Yeh-Shen’s only friend is a fish with golden eyes. When the stepmother kills the fish for dinner, poor Yeh-Shen is left with only the bones. But the bones are filled with a powerful spirit. When Ye-Shen is forbidden to attend the annual spring Festival, the spirit grants her a gown of azure blue and delicate golden slippers. That night, everyone marvels at the beautiful, mysterious young woman at the ball. “Misty, jewel-like illustrations evoke the mythic past in this Chinese Cinderella story.” — Publishers Weekly

Review: Ancient Chinese Cinderella - This isn't quite the oldest version of the story we call "Cinderella" in English -- the oldest is the ancient Greek story of Rhodopis, from 7 B.C. -- but the Chinese story of Yeh-Shen is undeniably part of the same tradition. It is a very short story, nowhere near as long or as detailed as the version to which most readers are accustomed. Even with as few pages as this book contains, there is very little text per page, and many pages contain no text at all. I suppose that's fairly common for children's books though, and it more than compensates for the lack of text by being beautifully illustrated. For anyone who appreciates Fairy Tales of any kind -- and especially those of non-European origins -- I highly recommend this book.
Review: Wonderful story about kindness. - Great story for a 2nd grader.
