So yes you will need to purchase the Lightwave hub. The Lightwave L2 link plus hub works with the old and newer devices and is Apple Home compatible so it is worth the little bit of extra money in my opinion. **Q: Is this the replacement to the original RF box, I have series 1** A: Yes **Q: Will this work without an internet connection? I.e. to communicate with phones on the local network or with a SmartThings hub?** A: Yes, it doesn't need an internet connection, but ideally there's a wireless network that you can control the lights through via the hub. If the hub is offline, the lights also still work individually, just without any of the groupings.
