Before the invention of printing, a trained memory was of vital importance. Based on a technique of impressing 'places' and 'images' on the mind, the ancient Greeks created an elaborate memory system which in turn was inherited by the Romans and passed into the European tradition, to be revived, in occult form, during the Renaissance. Frances Yates sheds light on Dante’s Divine Comedy , the form of the Shakespearian theatre and the history of ancient architecture; The Art of Memory is an invaluable contribution to aesthetics and psychology, and to the history of philosophy, of science and of literature. Review: A historical overview of memory techniques, especially those of Giordano Bruno - Yates has written here probably the most comprehensive book on memory techniques that has ever existed, taking us right through from Ancient Greece to the dawn of the Enlightenment. The section on Giordano Bruno's contribution is quite simply brilliant. Yates shows both the types of techniques and their moral significance, plus some surprising insights into William Shakespeare and the Globe Theatre. Her understanding of Hermetic techniques is rooted in the beliefs of her time, which sees them as Greek rather than Egyptian. Modern Egyptology has demonstrated that the Hermetic tradition is deeply rooted in Ancient Egypt. For more information I recommend The Hermetica: The Lost Wisdom of the Pharaohs and Egyptian Cosmology: The ABSOLUTE Harmony: The Animated Universe . The Hermetic tradition was dependent on a personal transcendental ecstatic experience. To understand what drove Bruno on, and to have knowledge of the inner structure of Hermetic doctrine, I recommend Divine Magic: HH Classics - Pythagoras: The Seven Sacred Secrets of Manifestation (Hay House Classics) Review: Recommend - excellent book ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | Best Sellers Rank | 87,396 in Books ( See Top 100 in Books ) 155 in Self Help Memory Improvement 159 in History of Science (Books) 1,025 in Scientific Psychology & Psychiatry | | Customer Reviews | 4.4 out of 5 stars 270 Reviews | ## Images ![The Art of Memory: Frances A Yates - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/917pUsovsnL.jpg) ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A historical overview of memory techniques, especially those of Giordano Bruno *by P***S on 28 February 2012* Yates has written here probably the most comprehensive book on memory techniques that has ever existed, taking us right through from Ancient Greece to the dawn of the Enlightenment. This edition I bought for my grandson who is studying at University and claims his memory is not too good. This will put him on the right track. Excellent, well presented, giving a solid history of the art of memory. I recommend it to anyone who has trouble remembering where their shopping list... or simply those preparing for public speaking.. It has many uses for anyone who needs to keep thinhgs in mind. I prefer it to ?Tony ?Buzan's books . He advocates a different way of memory traihing which I studies but found it did jnot work for me. This book did.. and at 86 years old.. my memory is good enough to give a two hour lecture without notes.. ## Frequently Bought Together - The Art of Memory - Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition - De Umbris Idearum: On the Shadows of Ideas (Collected Works of Giordano Bruno) --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.pt/products/53101413-the-art-of-memory-frances-a-yates](https://www.desertcart.pt/products/53101413-the-art-of-memory-frances-a-yates) --- *Product available on Desertcart Portugal* *Store origin: PT* *Last updated: 2026-10-10*
